PMO-RALG To Consult With CSOs On 2009 Local Government Elections

As the ministry supervising Local Government elections, the Prime Minister's Office - Regional Authorities and Local Government (PMO-RALG) has invited 9 Civil Society Organisations to a meeting to be held in Dodoma on the 10 October 2008 to solicit inputs from them regarding elections to be held in October 2009. A similar meeting was held with political parties on the 16th-17th of September 2008.

As one of the invited CSOs, Policy Forum through its Local Government Working Group (LGWG) will also be attending the consultative meeting. The LGWG has since last year been pushing for the government, through its consultations with the PMO-RALG, to harmonise local government elections by having them administered by the National Electoral Commission as is the case for presidential and parliamentary elections. This, along with the issue of bringing councilors' elections within the Local Government framework, will be among the matters likely to be raised by the Working Group in collaboration with other CSOs.

We will update you on this website on what transpired during the meeting.
