Accountability Programme in Tanzania (AcT)

Accountability Programme in Tanzania (AcT)

What is AcT?

The Accountability Programme in Tanzania (AcT) is an exciting, new initiative funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). The goal is to contribute to the achievement of the MDGs by ensuring that Tanzanians are increasingly able to claim and exercise their rights as citizens.

AcT will be achieved through the provision of funding to civil society organisations (CSO) that have the capacity and potential to innovate, scale-up and implement activities which increase the accountability of government around key national development priorities.

To maximise the realisation of objectives, the Programme also has resources for capacity building, mentoring and technical advisory support to civil society organisations.

When does AcT start funding?

AcT commenced in May 2009. The Programme involves a six-month Inception Phase before full implementation. Detailed guidelines and criteria on how AcT will provide funding to CSOs will be produced at the end of Inception Phase and published online and in other media.

How does AcT work?

The purpose of the Inception Phase is to understand where there is real potential to maximise the impact of increased accountability and to develop the process for how AcT will work through CSO partners. An important element of this will be mapping CSO activities on accountability.
Another is analysing existing initiatives to strengthen government responsiveness around which AcT support for civil society will be targeted.

Who manages AcT?

KPMG East Africa is responsible for managing AcT on behalf of DFID. KPMG leads a team comprising associate organisations: Delta Partnership Solutions, MDF Eastern and Southern Africa, and ODI.

The Programme Director is Dr Geir Sundet. Geir is based full-time in the KPMG office in Dar es Salaam, with overall responsibility for the Programme, including: Programme management; grants management; monitoring and learning; capacity building to potential partners; and evidence-based research and policy analysis work.

How is AcT funded?

AcT is funded under DFID’s Country Assistance Programme for Tanzania and the KPMG team works closely with DFID-Tanzania in the implementation of the Programme.

How to register interest in AcT?

AcT seeks active engagement with CSOs throughout Programme, especially the Inception Phase. To keep updated, we encourage CSOs to register their interest through email: act@kpmg.co.tz  or through the KPMG office in Dar es Salaam:
