THE SEVENTH REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON GENDER, POLICY AND HIV/AIDS
What
TGNP, a non Governmental and an advocacy Organization which has been promoting gender equality and equity, women’s empowerment and social transformation for over 13 years within Tanzania and beyond, invites applicants for the 8th Regional Training Course in Gender Policy and HIV/ AIDS.
When
The training will be held in Tanzania at TGNP- Gender Resource Centre from 9th to 20th June 2008.
Why
The training is premised on the reality that Eastern and Southern Africa are one of the regions worst affected by the HIV/ AIDS pandemic and that young women constitute the largest category of those infected. In recognition of the inter-linkages between gender and HIV/AIDS, many countries are attempting to have initiatives to mainstream gender and HIV/AIDS at policy, programmes and implementation processes. However, there is limited gender conceptual clarity and application skills among key decision makers and practitioners, civil societies and private institutions and the inter-relationship with HIV/AIDS, policy and macro economic issues. These limitations hamper efforts geared towards making gender and HIV/AIDS cross cutting issues in development policies, programmes and processes.
In view of the above, the Regional Training on Gender Policy and HIV/AIDS is based on the understanding that:
- Gender and sexuality are significant factors in the sexual transmission of HIV and that they also influence treatment, care and support
- The prevention and management of the spread of HIV/AIDS is inextricably linked to achieving gender equality and women empowerment
- Senior level actors actively involved in HIV/ AIDS related activities within Eastern and Southern Africa sub regions have a key role to play in promoting gender responsive behavioral change through policy and related processes
- Policy makers in public, civil societies and private institutions are products of gendered structures as such, they need gender conceptual clarity and capacity to deal with own and societal prejudices and assumptions which oftentimes become part of the problem rather than the solution
- Within the context of unequal global, regional and national economic and social relations, the continued spread of HIV/AIDS is one of the many impacts of unequal access to resources, decision making and imbalanced division of labour at all levels
The Regional training is one of the contributions to on-going efforts for addressing HIV/ AIDS issues in the sub-region. The training, which will be conducted by expert trainers in the areas of gender, policy and HIV AIDS, is based on professionally developed Training Manual on Gender, Policy and HIV/AIDS! The Manual was developed by TGNP with support of the Southern African AIDS Training Centre (SAT) and the Regional AIDS Training Network (RATN).
Participants of the course will have an opportunity to articulate with conceptual clarity key gender and sexuality concepts relating to policy issues around HIV and AIDS interventions; adopt a conceptual framework for gender analysis on the causality of inequalities in relation to HIV/ AIDS in the sub- regions and plan, formulate gender sensitive interventions and indicators for monitoring gender impact on HIV/ AIDS in the areas of the specific mandate; and share information and experience on gender, policy and HIV issues within the subregion.
