KULEANA

Named for a Kiswahili word that means “to nurture one another,” kuleana seeks to address the serious problems facing at risk children, and promotes and advocates children’s rights based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the African Charter on the Rights of the Child. Its activities focus on two significant areas. The first is its Street Children’s Centre (SCC), which houses and serves approximately 60 “street children.” The Centre is also engaged in researching “what works” for meeting their needs. The second focus is kuleana’s Advocacy Centre, a “think tank” which carries out advocacy, training, and identification of best practices. Key advocacy issues include gaining access, equity, and opportunity for primary school education, working with pregnant teenage girls, and ending corporal punishment in families and schools.kuleana believes that all children, girls and boys, have the right to a safe, just and joyful childhood. They believe that all children have the right to dignity and meaningful participation in our society. They believe that all children have a right to voice - to have their thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams be taken seriously and respected. They believe that adults need to learn to be with children in a new way. kuleana believes in a world in which children are celebrated.
